How long have you been vegan?
14 months now!
Why did you become vegan?
I wanted to relive my college football playing days at Ga Tech. Yet, I lacked the energy and stamina need to obtain the goal. So I signed up for Men’s Health Urban Athlon in Chicago. I finished in the middle of the pack but was very exhausted after the 9-mile, 7-obstacle course. That moment I decided to study the body and how it metabolizes energy. It all led back to the foods we eat. Slowly I began eliminating Chicken, fish and dairy. At this point red meat was not an option. Then, the icing on the cake was after my wife (also a vegan) and I watched Forks Over Knives and Food, Inc.
How was your transition?
My dad was a vegan during my youth and I ate what he ate when I visited him over the Summer and holidays. Once I turned vegan myself, my taste buds recalled some of those foods and made the proper adjustment.
What is the funniest misconception(s) that you have heard about vegans?
A young lady on Facebook exclaimed that real men eat meat during a heated exchange. I then asked if Mike Tyson, Herschel Walker or Joaquin Phoenix were not real men? I didn’t hear back from her.
What is your Favorite thing(s) about being a vegan?
I can eat as much as I want without calorie counting. Also, I feel fluid and light on my feet after meals.
What do you think makes a Sexy Bad Ass Vegan?
Confident mentality. You have to be ready to defend veganism on a moment’s notice because there are some pretty negative people in the world. It also doesn’t hurt to be able to run a marathon and work out with college football weight. What can I say, I feel like a Thor at times.
What is the best Vegan Restaurant you have ever had the pleasure of eating at?
Real Food Daily in LA and Hip City veg in Philly
What advice do you have for those that are thinking of transitioning to a vegan lifestyle?
Study the nutritional facts. Many are scared out of veganism because of their own doctors and friends who badger them about lack of vitamins, minerals, protein, iron, calcium etc, which is far from the truth. Research what foods provide your body with its daily essentials. Leafy greens are 50% protein and quinoa is a complete protein. Knowledge is power.
